Alien hand syndrome (AHS) represents a remarkable neuropsychiatric\u00a0disorder. According to phenomenological psychopathology,\u00a0one of the patient\u2019s hands displays purposeful, coordinated behavior\u00a0or posture as if it has \u201ca will of its own,\u201d with contrasting\u00a0behavior that opposes or interferes with motor activities in the other\u00a0hand. The patient therefore experiences \u201cestranged body\u201d feelings\u00a0and loses their sense of bodily ownership. At present, it has been\u00a0suggested that imbalance within the medial and lateral systems, the\u00a0isolation and dysfunction of internal and external driving systems,and body-neuromatrix distortion could be among the leading causes\u00a0of AHS. Both precuneus as well as the IFG may be regarded as neural\u00a0correlates of alien hand movements. Additionally, effective therapeutic\u00a0approaches including behavioral rehabilitation training, medical\u00a0treatment, and physical therapy have been developed to counter\u00a0AHS. The present paper summarizes recent advances in both basic\u00a0knowledge and clinical interventions for AHS. In closing, we propose\u00a0that future studies should focus on the construction of a standard\u00a0symptom assessment system, the achievement of the reciprocal\u00a0constraints of the first person and third person methods, and the\u00a0design of experiments that induce alien hand experiences in normal\u00a0subjects that will help to further understand the mechanisms of AHS.<\/p>\n
