This study aimed to compare and contrast the grief reactions of\u00a0widowed men and women and critique the arguable notions of masculine\u00a0grief and feminine grief. In-depth interviews were conducted\u00a0individually with 5 widowers and 5 widows aged 37 to 71, none of\u00a0whom remarried. All 10 had children and were either employed or\u00a0participated in volunteer work. Primary results include: At the moment\u00a0of spousal bereavement, grief reactions typically started as\u00a0seemingly more rational (such as appears unaffected) and later, transitioned\u00a0to more emotional reactions (such as crying). Second, widowers\u00a0tended to express their feelings more, while widows tended to\u00a0suppress their emotions. Third, all of those widowed were reluctant\u00a0to seek emotional support from the outside, and this was significantly\u00a0more pronounced in widows compared to widowers. To conclude,\u00a0the present essay argues that masculine and feminine grief would\u00a0benefit from being recoined rational and emotional grief, respectively,\u00a0as a more appropriate and accurate description of grief reactions\u00a0and the grieving process. Moreover, well-adjusted widowers or widows\u00a0usually combine both rational and emotional forms of grief.<\/p>\n
