The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of\u00a0disenfranchised grief in intensive-care-unit (ICU) nurses. The study\u00a0was conducted using qualitative methods, namely, semi-structured,\u00a0in-depth interviews with six ICU nurses. Data analysis was conducted\u00a0using Colaizzi’s (1978) seven-step approach of phenomenological\u00a0inquiry. Five themes related to the experiences of disenfranchised\u00a0grief emerged, including: 1) professional norms of nursing; 2) challenges\u00a0of the ICU work environment; 3) changes in grief reactions\u00a0over time; 4) coping methods and mechanisms toward grief and\u00a0mourning; and 5) personal growth and life learning. Results consistently\u00a0demonstrated the difficulties and eventual growth of the nurse\u00a0when faced with the deaths of patients. Results also suggest that successful\u00a0coping involves adequate balance between professional work\u00a0and personal fulfillment, between roles\/demands and personal needs\/\u00a0recovery. Based on these findings, suggestions are provided for how\u00a0to deal with individual disenfranchised grief as an institution.<\/p>\n
