Chinese couples\u2019 marital affection involves not only intimacy, but also\u00a0gratitude and appreciation (Enqing). For couples with young children, there\u00a0are increasing amount of work load for chores and child care. Division of\u00a0labor becomes an important factor challenging the stability and development\u00a0of marital affection. In terms of method of analyzing marital affection,\u00a0treating \u201ccouple\u201d as a unit of analysis can characterize the mutual perceptions\u00a0between couples. There were two main goals of this study: first, this study\u00a0would examine the positive agreement, negative agreement and disagreement\u00a0for couples\u2019 affection, and types of marital affection. Second, this study\u00a0would examine the differences on division of labor among different marital\u00a0affection types.
\nThis study investigated marital affection and division of household labor\u00a0among 309 couples with children age 3-6, by employing \u201ccouple\u201d as an\u00a0analysis unit. We analyzed levels of positive agreement, negative agreement\u00a0and disagreement on marital affection for each couple who completed our\u00a0survey. Our results indicated that the majority of couples had high levels of\u00a0positive agreement, and low levels of negative agreement. Disagreement was\u00a0shown on \u201cenqing\u201d items, rather than on \u201cintimacy\u201d items. Couples were\u00a0also categorized into five different affection types. Significant differences in\u00a0division of household labor were found between the groups.<\/p>\n
