The purpose of this study was twofold. We first analyzed\u00a0determinants of child rearing decisions among married couples, and\u00a0then we examined whether various decision-making mechanisms\u00a0resulted in different outcomes of the child\u2019s educational arrangements.\u00a0Our findings indicated that intact Taiwanese couples behaved\u00a0consistently with individualistic preference model in which the earning\u00a0ability significantly determined the couple\u2019s decision-making power.\u00a0The spouse with a job had a stronger tendency to decide on matters\u00a0related to the education of children. Extra-environmental parameters\u00a0such as dowry paid would increase the probability of wife\u2019s\u00a0decision-making, but the reverse would be true for the case in which\u00a0the couple co-resides with their mother-in-law. In the latter case, the\u00a0probability of joint decisions or decisions by the husband increased at\u00a0the expense of the likelihood of decisions by the wife. Accordingly, the\u00a0child\u2019s educational arrangements were substantially affected by\u00a0different decision-makers. If the husband made decision, he tended to\u00a0focus on moving residential registration to better educational districts\u00a0or migrating to urban area, whereas if the wife made decision, she\u00a0tended to care more about child\u2019s overseas study and educational fund\u00a0raising. These findings help to clarify the relationship between the\u00a0formation of the family decision mechanisms and human capital\u00a0investment arrangement on the child. They also shed light on the\u00a0design and evaluations of the social welfare policies with regard to the\u00a0possible effects on the various decision making patterns among the\u00a0couples and thus on the well-being of their family members.<\/p>\n
