This action research is conducted by the first author as a kindergartenteacher. Its purpose is to explore and reflect upon the process of implementing\u00a0\u201cportfolio assessment.\u201d \u201cGrowing up\u201d is the core concept in this article, and it\u00a0is presented by the narrative approach. The whole process involves:\u00a0observations on the learning of children, examination on the contents of their\u00a0portfolios, teachers\u2019 professional knowledge, and our knowledge on action\u00a0research. Observations, interviews, video recordings, examinations and\u00a0rectifications on actions all help the researchers come to the following findings:\u00a01. Children\u2019s portfolios do not provide sufficient information for teachers to\u00a0improve their curriculum design and pedagogy nor do they help to establish a\u00a0better look at children\u2019s development. 2. Portfolio proves more of a\u00a0\u201csouvenir\u201d than an adequate \u201cmethod of assessment.\u201d 3. Communications\u00a0among colleagues should take priority over research. Through the 15 months\u00a0process, the authors have noticed several layers of growth: children\u2019s improved\u00a0ability to appreciate their personal portfolios, the researchers\u2019 development in\u00a0teaching as well as their advancement in conducting action research.<\/p>\n
