This research combined the expertise of counseling and\u00a0information technology to explore the design principles of a real-time\u00a0webcounseling system and the effects of computer-mediated\u00a0emotion-laden communication. We applied the action research\u00a0approach and ran through three action research cycles. The first\u00a0intervention involved developing a real-time webcounseling system\u00a0prototype and executing a feasibility experiment. The second cycle\u00a0integrated the findings of the first one into the new version of the\u00a0webcounseling system and engaged in the real situation by inviting\u00a0real counselors and clients. The third cycle dealt with counselors\u2019\u00a0typing speed and administrative issues in webcounseling context. The\u00a0major data source came from interviews of users. Researchers\u2019\u00a0observation during experiments was another source for system\u00a0modification.
\nWe found out five important design principles of the real-time\u00a0webcounseling system, including: (1) the expression-assisting\u00a0function was very important and should consist of different\u00a0sub-functions to meet different persons\u2019 preferences; (2) the reliability\u00a0and response speed of webcounseling systems were very important,\u00a0and some management processes should be provided to complement\u00a0the limitation of technology; (3) message-entering clues were\u00a0necessary to facilitate the receiving side to understand what the other\u00a0side was doing; (4) verbal-assistant function was helpful for counselor\u00a0to reduce the typing task; and (5) back-end management function\u00a0could save the time for administrative work. This study also pointed\u00a0out some important issues of real-time webcounseling.<\/p>\n
