The purpose of this study was to understand the development of the parent-child relationship of an immigrant mother in a Chinese family context. The participant was a Cambodian-born Vietnamese lady who married a Taiwanese man with mild impairment. After the marriage, they lived with the man\u2019s parents. The researcher interviewed the lady and observed the interactions with her children in outing occasions. She related her childrearing perspectives to her childhood experiences and felt disappointed at her husband\u2019s involvement as a parent. The conflicts between her and other family members, especially her father-in-law, made her undergo a reform. The following 3 themes emerged from the analyses: the undesirable family role of an immigrant mother, the favorable status of the son as compared to the daughter, and the differential parent-child relationships with the son and daughter. The results reflect her distress and deprivation in the structure of a Taiwanese family. However, she strived to change her parenting approach and works hard to deal with her family issues. This case study demonstrates the struggles and empowerment process that immigrant mothers typically go through.<\/p>\n
