Researchers have explored many topics of speech perception\u00a0development, from assessing whether newborns were able to distinguish\u00a0speech sounds of native and foreign languages to investigate\u00a0whether school-aged children with language-related impairment experienced\u00a0any speech processing difficulties and adversely affected\u00a0the development of language. Developmental mechanisms of speech\u00a0perception included, listening experience with the native language,\u00a0statistical learning and social interaction. Studies have not only documented\u00a0the developmental path of speech perception from newborns\u00a0to middle childhood, but also provided critical evidence to examine\u00a0basic issues of developmental psychology, such as the initial state of\u00a0mental development and effects of culture on development. This paper\u00a0reviews thesis and journal articles published between 2000 and\u00a02012 by Taiwan researchers on speech perception development and\u00a0organized in two topics. First, we review studies on speech perception\u00a0development in typically-developing children, especially focused\u00a0on the developmental mechanisms and the perceptual development of \u201clexical tones,\u201d the unique phonetic unit in tonal languages.\u00a0Second, we review speech perception studies on Mandarin-speaking
\nchildren with language impairments, including hearing-impairment\u00a0children with cochlear implants, children with specific language impairment,\u00a0and children with reading impairment. In conclusion, studies\u00a0on speech perception development in Taiwan has kept pace with\u00a0current research trends in the western world and provides evidence\u00a0to examine issues of language-specific influences on speech perception\u00a0development. Issues for future studies are discussed.<\/p>\n
